Southeastern US gets ready for icy, snowy weekend

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A winter storm that walloped northern Texas and Oklahoma promises to make a messy weekend for the Southeast.

Up to a foot of snow is predicted along a line that follows the borders of Arkansas and Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky and into western North Carolina and Virginia.

The National Weather Service warns that snow turned to freezing rain Friday night over western Tennessee and northeastern Arkansas. That could mean icy roads and downed power lines.

Already, several interstates through mountainous parts of North Carolina were shut down.

The same storm dumped more than a foot of snow in north Texas. Ice crippled power for thousands of customers across Oklahoma.
