Tropical Storm Julia forms with winds of 40 mph

MIAMI — Tropical Storm Julia has formed in the Atlantic with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph).

Meanwhile, Hurricane Igor continued to strengthen far from land.

Officials have issued a tropical storm warning for parts of the Cape Verde Islands on Sunday, including Maio, Sao Tiago, Fogo and Brava.

On Sunday night, Julia was located about 110 miles (175 km) southeast of the Cape Verde Islands. Its moving around 12 mph to the west-northwest. Julia is expected to strengthen and could become a hurricane this week.

Further west, Igor’s maximum sustained winds had increased to about 150 mph (240 kph). The storm could become a monstrous Category 5 hurricane on Monday. Igor was located about 1,005 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands and was moving west at 13 mph.
