Super Typhoon Megi Strikes Philippines

MANILA, PHILIPPINES (GaeaTimes.com)- Super typhoon Megi struck the northern region of Philippines on Monday triggering a state of emergency in parts of the nation. According to weather officials, the typhoon made its presence felt at the Isabela province at 11:25 in the morning and was on its way to the west-southwest direction towards the north of the main island of Luzon. It has been reported that super typhoon Megi, which is locally known by the name of Juan, has a sustained winds speed of 190 kph near its focal point.

The weather bureau in Philippines has upgraded super typhoon Megi to the category 5 typhoon with its winds of more than 250 kph. However, forecasters have confirmed that after the typhoon struck the mountains of the northwest Luzon, its strength has reduced to a large extent. In the wake of the unfavorable weather conditions, emergency officials across the country are on a high alert to deal with the situation while many schools in parts hit by super typhoon Megi have remained shut. The typhoon was also accompanied with heavy rains and strong winds which is said to have claimed at least one life, as per the latest reports.

Northern Luzon military head Lieutenant-General Gaudencio Pangilinan divulged to reporters that the super typhoon Megi has managed to wreck a havoc in the Cagayan and Isabela provinces with roofs of large number of houses being blown away while trees were also uprooted. At the same time, the military chief also noted that owing to the torrential rains, visibility in parts of the country worst hit by the typhoon was zero.
