Mighty East Coast rainstorm blamed for 6 deaths

LEVITTOWN, N.Y. — A torrential downpour that washed out roads and cut power to thousands along the East Coast is being blamed for a death in Pennsylvania — the sixth related to the storm.

State police say a woman apparently drove her car into a rain-swollen creek in southeastern Pennsylvania before daybreak Friday. Police believe flood waters may have obscured her view of the edge of the road in Collegeville.

On Thursday, four people, including two children, were killed when their SUV skidded off a highway about 145 miles east of Raleigh and plunged into a water-filled ditch. A fifth victim likely drowned when his pickup veered off the road and into a river that was raging because of the rain.

The storm edged into Boston early Friday afternoon.
