Militants storm intelligence building in Yemen
SAN’A, Yemen — Security officials say armed men, believed to be linked to al-Qaida, have stormed the intelligence service headquarters in Yemen’s port city of Aden.
The officials say the men, armed with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers, took over the building’s central courtyard on Saturday morning and have made their way into its detention facility, where al-Qaida suspects are often held.
The officials clashes with the facility’s guards are continuing, although it’s still not known if people have been killed or wounded. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.
Nearby residents say they can hear heavy gunfire and see plumes of smoke rising from the building, as well as ambulances leaving the area.
