Guatemala lowers Tropical Storm Agatha death toll
GUATEMALA — Guatemala’s disaster agency has lowered the nation’s death toll from Tropical Storm Agatha to 165.
Officials previously reported 174 dead, but have since determined that some victims were counted twice.
Disaster agency spokesman Carlos Bianchi said Tuesday that 18,700 homes were destroyed, more than double the 7,000 previously reported.
Officials estimate that Agatha caused nearly $475 million in damage nationwide.
The storm hit May 29 and brought the heaviest rains Guatemala has seen in 60 years.
Across Central America, flooding and mudslides unleashed by Agatha killed nearly 200 people.
