LOUISIANA (GaeaTimes.com) — According to coast guard reports, an offshore oil platform under Mariner Energy has exploded in Gulf of Mexico today. This rig is located to the BP rig which exploded earlier causing a massive oil spill.

Thirteen workers were present in that platform during that explosion. But fortunately all of them are safe and were spotted floating in water wearing emergency gear called gumby suits.

A commercial helicopter first spotted the explosion, the cause of which is still being investigated early Thursday afternoon. During an initial flyover of the area, officials did not spot any oil spilling, though this scenario might change later.

Luckily, even if there is any oil spill from that rig, he cleanup process would be much easier on this platform than during the BP debacle. In fact, this rig was dug in shallow water unlike that one of BP’s. Hence clean up process can be done easily.
