Magnitude 4.4 earthquake shakes southern Calif.

LOS ANGELES — Millions of southern Californians have been shaken awake by an early morning earthquake.

The magnitude 4.4 quake was centered about 10 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, near Pico Rivera. It happened just after 4 a.m.

Los Angeles County Fire Department supervisor Andre Gougis says the agency is surveying the area, but has received no immediate reports of damage. But the quake did present a sharp jolt to slumbering residents in eastern Los Angeles County.

Tuesday’s quake was centered near the October 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake, a magnitude 5.9 quake that killed eight people and caused more than $350 million in damage.
