Conditions improve for W.Va. mine rescue attempt
MONTCOAL, W.Va. — Gov. Joe Manchin is saying that conditions are improving in a West Virginia mine, but rescue crews are not yet ready to re-enter to look for four miners because gases are still too dangerous.
Manchin said the crews may be able to enter the mine later Thursday night. Rescuers are eager to resume the underground search after an explosion killed 25 colleagues.
But Manchin says the gas levels are still a little too high.
The rescuers spent more than four hours working their way through the Upper Big Branch mine by rail car and on foot, but had to turn back earlier Thursday.
