Danielle weakens to tropical storm in the Atlantic

MIAMI — Danielle has weakened to a tropical storm far from land over the Atlantic, but forecasters say it could become a hurricane again in the next couple of days.

The hurricane reached Category 2 strength earlier Tuesday, but gradually lost punch throughout the day. Its maximum sustained winds were near 70 mph (110 kph) in the late afternoon.

Danielle is located about 895 miles (1,445 kilometers) east of the Lesser Antilles and is moving west-northwest near 18 mph (32 kph).

Meanwhile in the Pacific, Tropical Storm Frank has strengthened as is moves slowly away from Mexico. Frank’s maximum sustained winds have increased to near 70 mph (110 kph). The storm is located about 150 miles (240 kilometers) southwest of Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and is moving west-northwest.
