Magnitude 7.1 quake hits Solomon Islands (Lead, changing dateline)

SYDNEY - A magnitude 7.1 undersea quake struck Solomon Islands Sunday, but no tsunami alert was issued, Xinhua said.

The quake occured at 8.40 p.m. There was no report yet of damage.

The epicentre of the quake was located 97 km southwest of Kira Kira in the Pacific Ocean, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has urged the authorities to remain alert.
