Miscreants open fire at Panjab University student leader

CHANDIGARH - Police have booked cases against unknown assailants who attacked a student leader and his family members outside their house here Wednesday night, said an official here Thursday.

According to police, some miscreants who had come in four luxury cars, including Innova, Swift and Optra, fired at least a dozen rounds at Uday Singh Wirrang, his father Bhupinder Singh and his cousin Gurbaz Singh outside their house in Sector 11.

Uday is president of the Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) of Panjab University (PU) here.

“We have registered case against unknown miscreants and started our investigation. Forensic experts and sniffer dogs were also called to the spot to collect vital clues relating to this case,” said Pargat Singh, investigating officer.

Uday has named at least seven students of a rival political party, Students’ Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU), for the attack.

“We were standing outside our house and waiting for one of our relatives. Suddenly they came in four cars and opened fire at us. We ran inside to save our lives. I have already given the names of persons on whom I have strong suspicion to the police,” said Uday.

The incident happened just one kilometre away from the Sector 11 police station and around two-and-a-half kilometres away from the Chandigarh police headquarters.
