Obama to address W. Va. explosion, rescue efforts
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is set to address the deadly coal mine explosion in West Virginia and talk about rescue efforts that are under way.
At least 25 miners were killed in Monday’s blast, the worst U.S. mining disaster in more than two decades. Rescue workers are searching for four missing miners, but their efforts have been hampered by poison gases near the blast site.
Obama called West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin Monday night to express his condolences. In a statement, the White House said that Obama told Manchin the federal government stands ready to offer whatever assistance in needed in the rescue effort.
