IOC backs Russia over security at Sochi Olympics
LAUSANNE, Switzerland — The International Olympic Committee says it is confident Russia will provide a safe Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014.
The IOC expressed condolences to the victims of Monday’s suicide bomb attacks in Moscow. At least 38 people were killed when two women blew themselves up in subway stations during the morning rush hour. Russian authorities blamed rebels from the Caucasus region.
Sochi is in the same southern region and near the Georgian border. Georgia fought a brief 2008 war with Russia over disputed territory.
The IOC calls security a top priority and expects Russia to put in place “all necessary measures” to ensure a safe Olympics in four years.
