US warns danger of crime, kidnappings in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The U.S. State Department is expanding its warning against travel to Haiti, saying that four Americans have been killed since the Jan. 12 earthquake.

It comes a week after two European aid workers were kidnapped and held for five days before being released.

Monday’s updated warning says dangers of violent crime persist in Haiti including killings and kidnappings, and “some kidnap victims have been killed, shot, sexually assaulted or physically abused.”

The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince did not say how the Americans were killed. There have been no reports of Americans being kidnapped.

The travel warning says Haitian police and U.N. peacekeepers remain critical to maintaining security.
