CHILE (GaeaTimes.com)- The earthquake that rattled Chile a few days back has messed up with the public life there and the number of casualties has only increased with time. The damages to the properties have run into millions. However, a section of the scientists feel the violent quake has done more damage to the place than we can perceive. According to some scientists of NASA, the massive quake that caused tsunamis was so severe in nature that it has possibly jolted the axis of the Earth. As a result, they presume that the position of the Earth’s axis has been changed and the rotational speed of the planet has gone up. The scientists involved with the Jet Propulsion laboratory of NASA are of the opinion that owing to the quake the duration of day on the earth has been reduced by a slight margin.

Richard Gross, working in the U.S. space agency has used a complicated math model to simulate the impact of the Chileearthquake and calculated the aftereffect. According to his views, the days on the Earth are 0.00000126 seconds shorter now. The change in the axis, according to the researcher will be permanent. Richard Gross has also said that it is not possible to verify his calculations since the observation of the duration of a day can never be accurate.

The finding about the change in the earth’s axis has created a sensation among the scientists and some of them have also raised questions about its validity. However, the supporters of the theory feel, the change, however, small it may be, can have long term effects.
