VENTURA (GaeaTimes.com)- A minor tsunami occurred in Ventura County on Saturday. The tsunami did not injure anyone, however it damaged more than 12 boats. Devastating tsunamis are not very frequent in California. 14 tsunamis are observed ever since 1812, in which the waves rose more than 10 feet. 6 out of them were very strong causing destruction. Worst among them occurred in the year 1964. It had a magnitude 9.2.
On Saturday, at around 1 p.m. the tsunami occurred in Ventura. The waves rose up to 10 feet. Many boats were present during the tsunami in the Ventura Harbor. Some of them got partially submerged under water. According to Battalion Chief, Matt Brock of the Ventura Fire Department, the boat owners could reportedly get back their boats quickly after the tsunami. Though a number of boats were affected, the damages were minor.
Even though the tsunami did not cause much harm, the Ventura police and the fire departments alerted people as there was a massive 8.8 earthquake in Chile. They told people to avoid sea shores during the time. Especially low-lying coastal areas and rocky areas as big waves could sweep people unexpectedly.
Brett Thompson, a person who was at Ventura Harbor during the tsunami said, though a boat got unmoored, “It was quickly captured and re-tied.” According to him the inflation in the waves was about 4 feet to 6 feet. To the Battalion Chief Matt Brock of the Ventura Fire Department, it was more like a ’swell’ in the level of the water and not a ‘visible wave.’ He further added, no human being was injured in the process. It did not even harm any houses close to the sea shore.
