LONDON - A man has been arrested in Britain for killing his 100-year-old frail, blind mother, a media report said Thursday.

Hannah Fitzgibbon, who had recently celebrated her 100th birthday with a party and telegram from the Queen, was found dead Wednesday at the home she shared with her 61-year-old son Michael, Daily Express reported.

Michael had been caring for his elderly mother. He was led away after the police were called to the bungalow in Whitechapel, east London.

Neighbour Susan Lowe said: “There were balloons and everything outside on her 100th birthday - for this to happen after that is absolutely terrible.”

London ambulance service and police attended and discovered a 100-year-old female suffering from a single stab wound to the neck. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin have been informed. A 61-year-old man has been arrested and is currently in custody, an official was quoted as saying.

A relative said: Im absolutely dumbfounded. Its a terrible tragedy - Ive only just found out. Michael would always look after his mother - he did everything for her. He is a nice bloke.

He looked after her every need - cooking, shopping, everything. The family have been living in this part of the East End for about 150 years. Hannah grew up here and lived here all her life.
