Freight cars derail in Santa Fe, cause evacuation
SANTA FE, Texas — Authorities say about 20 freight cars derailed in southeast Texas and caused a brief evacuation after an oil-based substance leaked.
Police Capt. Wayne Kessler says no injuries were reported after a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train bound for Houston derailed in Santa Fe around 5:30 a.m. Thursday.
Kessler says one tanker car ruptured and leaked a nonhazardous, oil-based substance used to make asphalt.
He says an evacuation order issued for a mile radius around the derailment site was lifted within two hours.
There’s no word on what caused the derailment.
Fort Worth-based Burlington Northern Santa Fe train had no immediate comment.
Santa Fe is a city of about 11,000, located 30 miles southeast of Houston.
