LUCKNOW - The Uttar Pradesh police Wednesday carried out searches at various places to arrest a Samajwadi Party legislator, Sultan Beg, the alleged mastermind of a truck-lifters’ gang.
Searches were carried out at Beg’s official residence in Lucknow, VIP guesthouses, prominent hotels and other places in parts of Uttar Pradesh, officials said.
Beg, the legislator from Kanwar assembly constituency in Bareilly district, has been allegedly operating a gang of truck lifters, according to police.
On Sunday night, police seized four trucks from a Bareilly farmhouse which Beg owns.
Six men were arrested who disclosed that the lawmaker and his son-in-law and brother were running the racket.
“In order to arrest Beg, we have even sought assistance from the Lucknow police. We are making every effort to arrest Beg and his two relatives,” Superintendent of Police (Bareilly rural) Vijay Gautam told reporters.
“We may also go for attaching Beg’s property if he is not arrested soon,” he added.
