New Delhi, India (GaeaTimes.com)- A report submitted by the metro authorities has revealed more than 100 workers have died during the construction of the metro railway line since 1998. The news might come as a shock to many but people living in New Delhi are aware of the hazardous and dangerous situation created by the metro railway construction in India’s capital. Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal, however, chose to brush aside the information and said that most of the deaths occurred due to other reasons around the metro construction site and were not related to the safety standards of the metro projects. He said that only 9 or 10 deaths were caused due to collapse of structures and the number was also low compared to other major construction projects across the world.

The Delhi metro opened its first line in 2002. Commuters prefer the air-conditioned metro service to the other means of local transport like crowded buses and auto-rickshaws. The deaths, however, started occurring since 1998. Recently, the project has been under great pressure due to the upcoming Commonwealth games. Some experts have alleged that due to the swift construction measures, the safety standards have been greatly compromised in the construction of the Delhi metro.

The authorities in charge of the construction of the Delhi metro have revealed that families of the deceased have received amounts between Rs. 150,000 to Rs.90,000. Among some of the recent accidents, a pillar, supporting a partially built bridge, collapsed, killing at least 6 people in the southern region of Delhi. Earlier in the same month a worker died after a girder fell on him.
