GAITHERSBURG (GaeaTimes.com)- The residents of Gaithersburg were in for a rude shock as a powerful earthquake struck the area at 5 a.m on Friday morning. The impact was felt throughout Maryland and adjoining areas and even as far as Pennsylvania. More than 3 million people have reportedly felt the 3.6 magnitude earthquake that also happens to be the strongest felt by the area since 1974.

As the impact was strongly felt in Washington, President Barack Obama was asked by the media whether he felt the earthquake. The President laughed and said that he could not feel it. After the earthquake struck early morning most residents were seen asking each other whether they felt the quake or not. Crews were immediately sent by authorities to inspect the bridges and other important constructions for any damage due to the tremors. Many of the Maryland residents thought that it was some kind of an explosion, or a low flying aircraft and some even thought it was a tornado. No damage or injuries have been reported so far.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake may cause some aftershocks as well. In spite of the magnitude being less, the earthquake was enough to rattle the household items throughout the houses in Maryland. Tremors were felt across Baltimore area, Virginia, Delaware and even some parts of New Jersey. Residents also complained that their pets went berserk during the quake. Though the area has experienced a number of quakes over the last few years, none of them have crossed the 3 mark on the Richter scale before.
