US military deaths in Afghan region at 1,079

As of Friday, July 9, 2010, at least 1,079 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to an Associated Press count.

The AP count is eight more than the Defense Department’s tally, last updated Friday at 10 a.m. EDT.

At least 853 military personnel have died in the Afghan region as a result of hostile action, according to the military’s numbers.

Outside the Afghan region, the department reports at least 78 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, eight were the result of hostile action. The military lists the other locations as Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba; Djibouti; Eritrea; Ethiopia; Jordan; Kenya; Kyrgyzstan; Philippines; Seychelles; Sudan; Tajikistan; Turkey; and Yemen.

The Defense Department also counts two military civilian deaths.

The latest deaths reported by the military:

— An American died Friday in southern Afghanistan.

— An American service member was killed by an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday.

The latest identifications reported by the military:

— Three soldiers died July 6 at Qalat, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device. Killed were: Staff Sgt. Marc A. Arizmendez, 30, of Anaheim, Calif.; Spc. Roger Lee, 26, of Monterey, Calif.; and Pfc. Michael S. Pridham, 19, of Louisville, Ky. They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, Hohenfels, Germany.

— Pfc. Edwin C. Wood, 18, of Omaha, Neb., and Staff Sgt. Christopher F. Cabacoy, 30, of Virginia Beach, Va.; died July 5 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device; assigned to 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.

— Sgt. Louis R. Fastuca, 24, of West Chester, Pa.; died July 5 in Afghanistan of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device; assigned to 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Camp Ederle, Italy.

— Spc. Keenan A. Cooper, 19, of Wahpeton, N.D., and Spc. Jerod H. Osborne, 20, of Royse City, Texas; died July 5 in Yakuta, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked their unit using an improvised explosive device; assigned to the 4th Squadron, 73rd Armor Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

— Spc. Clayton D. McGarrah, 20, of Harrison, Ark.; died July 4 at Arghandab, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device and rocket-propelled grenade fire; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

— Sgt. Andrew J. Creighton, 23, of Laurel, Del.; died July 4 in Oruzgan province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained on July 1 while conducting combat operations in Oruzgan province; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

— Pfc. Jacob A. Dennis, 22, of Powder Springs, Ga.; died July 3 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries sustained June 30 in a weapons system accident at Forward Operating Base Lane, Afghanistan (Zabul province); assigned to the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

— Pfc. David Jefferson, 23, of Philadelphia; died July 2 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

— Capt. David A. Wisniewski, 31, of Moville, Iowa; died July 2 of wounds sustained June 9 in a helicopter crash near Forward Operating Base Jackson, Afghanistan; assigned to the 66th Rescue Squadron, Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.

— Spc. Ryan J. Grady, 25, of Bristow, Okla.; died July 1 at Bagram, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised-explosive device; assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Bradford, Vt.

— Sgt. 1st Class Kristopher D. Chapleau, 33, of La Grange, Ky., died June 30 at Forward Operating Base Blessing, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained from a noncombat related incident; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.
