BEIJING - Over 800 online gamblers were arrested across China while they were betting on the World Cup, the ministry of public security said Thursday.

Among those arrested, 65 people were from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, the Philippines and Malaysia, while the rest were from mainland China, China Daily reported citing a ministry statement.

“After the 2010 World Cup in South Africa started, police have struck against online football gambling so as to prevent gambling groups from taking advantage of the event to expand their business,” Gu Jian, an official with the ministry’s online security bureau, was quoted as saying.

During the period June 11-July 5, police have seized over 50 million yuan ($7.3 million) in cash meant for gambling, the statement said.
