US military deaths in Afghan region at 1,052

As of Friday, June 25, 2010, at least 1,052 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to an Associated Press count.

The AP count is eight more than the Defense Department’s tally, last updated Friday at 10 a.m. EDT.

At least 823 military personnel have died in the Afghan region as a result of hostile action, according to the military’s numbers.

Outside the Afghan region, the department reports at least 78 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, eight were the result of hostile action. The military lists these other locations as Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba; Djibouti; Eritrea; Ethiopia; Jordan; Kenya; Kyrgyzstan; Philippines; Seychelles; Sudan; Tajikistan; Turkey; and Yemen.

The Defense Department also counts two military civilian deaths.

The latest deaths reported by the military:

—Two American service members died Friday in Afghanistan.

—An American service member died Thursday in southern Afghanistan.

—An American service member died Monday from a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

The latest identifications reported by the military:

—Pfc. Russell E. Madden, 29, of Dayton, Ky.; died Wednesday in Charkh district, Kunar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his vehicle with rocket fire; assigned to the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Conn Barracks, Germany.

—Pfc. Anthony T. Justesen, 22, of Wilsonville, Ore.; died Wednesday in Pusht Rod district, Farah province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device; assigned to Troop B, 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

—Cpl. Joshua R. Dumaw, 23, of Spokane Valley, Wash.; died Tuesday while supporting combat operations in Nimroz province, Afghanistan; assigned to 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C.

—Cpl. Kevin A. Cueto, 23, of San Jose, Calif.; died Tuesday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif.

—Cpl. Claudio Patino IV, 22, of Yorba Linda, Calif.; died Tuesday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif.

—1st Sgt. Eddie Turner, 41, of Fort Belvoir, Va.; died Tuesday at Camp Clark, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained from a noncombat related incident; assigned to the 626th Brigade Support Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

—Pfc. David T. Miller, 19, of Wilton, N.Y., and Spc. Andrew R. Looney, 22, of Owasso, Okla.; died Monday at Lar Sholtan Village, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when a suicide bomber attacked their unit. Both were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

—Lance Cpl. Timothy G. Serwinowski, 21, of North Tonawanda, N.Y.; died Monday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

—Spc. Scott A. Andrews, 21, of Fall River, Mass.; died Monday at Forward Operating Base Lagman, Zabul province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device; assigned to the 618th Engineer Support Company, 27th Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineers Brigade, Fort Bragg, N.C.

—Staff Sgt. James P. Hunter, 25, of South Amherst, Ohio; died June 18 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device; assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

—Pfc. Benjamin J. Park, 25, of Fairfax Station, Va.; died June 18 at Zhari district, Kandahar, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device; assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

—Seaman William Ortega, 23, of Miami; died June 18 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device blast while conducting combat operations against enemy forces; assigned as a hospital corpsman to Third Battalion, First Marine Regiment, First Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force.

—Spc. Nathan W. Cox, 27, of Fremont, Calif.; died June 16 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries sustained June 14 when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire at Near Forward Operating Base in Khogyani, Afghanistan; assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

—Spc. Joseph D. Johnson, 24, of Flint, Mich., and Pfc. Gunnar R.
