Alitalia flight makes emergency landing in Boston

BOSTON — Massachusetts authorities say an Alitalia flight that had just left Boston for Rome returned to Logan International Airport after someone reported seeing fire coming out of one of its engines.

Airport spokesman Phil Orlandella says Alitalia Flight 615 landed safely in Boston Tuesday evening.

He says the plane was carrying 250 people.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the engine fire.

TV footage showed the Airbus 330 taxiing on the tarmac after the emergency landing, with smoke coming from the stricken engine.

According to Alitalia’s website, the flight was scheduled to leave Boston at 5:45 p.m. and land in Rome at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday.
