Gulf Of Mexico (GaeaTimes.com)- The oil spill at the Gulf of Mexico that started on April 20 is still continuing and along with the humans it is threatening the marine animals and wildlife at large. The wildlife activists have cried foul ever since the ghastly images of the oil coated birds have appeared in the web. The birds are losing their lives owing to the oil spill though some of them have been rescued and washed to give them a new lease of life. Some experts are of the opinion that the birds that have suffered a lot from the oil coat should be killed as keeping them alive will only add to their trouble.

The birds that have survived the oil exposure and rescued still face threat as their liver and kidney might have received irreparable damage. The birds that have been rescued may not be able to give birth to new generation as well. The recovery rate of animals and birds exposed to oil depends on the situation ad in the case of birds affected by the Gulf Oil spill the chances of recovery are dubious. A number if the washed and rescued birds may have ingested oil before they were taken to the rescue centers. For them the oil is toxic and it can lead to slow death.

The pelicans and birds at the coastal areas of Louisiana have been the worst affected lot. The rescuers have said that the oil spill at the BP rig has killed a lot more birds than what they could rescue. Some of the rescued birds have been released in the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge of Florida.
