KURUKSHETRA - Siding with the accused in a case of molestation and attempted rape of a deaf and dumb girl 13 years ago has landed five Haryana police officers in jail — they were among 11 people sentenced by a local court to imprisonment for two years.

The five police officers include a serving deputy superintendent of police (DSP). Kurukshetra is about 110 km from Chandigarh.

The decision of the court came 13 years after some youth in a village near here molested a deaf and dumb girl and attempted to rape her.

The police officers, instead of registering the complaint from the family of the victim, booked a case against them and started harassing them.

The court said the connivance of the police officers with the accused was proved.

The convicted DSP was an inspector at the time of the incident and in-charge of a police station where the victim’s family had complained.

The court also imposed a penalty of Rs.1,000 on each of the 11 people convicted in this case.
