RANCHI - At least 11 passengers were killed and 18 injured when a bus carrying them overturned after hitting a tree in Jharkhand’s Pakur district Monday morning, police said.

The accident occurred when the bus, carrying around 45 to 50 passengers, was on its way to Dumka district from Pakur. It hit a tree near Koriyodih village, around 500 km from Ranchi, and then turned turtle.

“At least 11 people were killed and 18 injured. The injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of seven of them is said to be serious,” a police official told IANS over telephone.

The accident triggered protests by angry relatives, who have blocked the Hirnapur and Littipara road, demanding Rs.500,000 in compensation.
