GREATER NOIDA - A marriage, fixed against the wishes of a khap panchayat (caste council), was solemnised Saturday under police protection in a village in Greater Noida.

In Chithera village, where almost all the residents belong to the Bhati clan, a family had arranged the marriage of their son with a girl of the same clan in nearby Vishnoli village.

The khap objected to the marriage on the grounds that the entire village will have to treat her as their daughter-in-law while she is the daughter of their khap. It passed a resolution threatening to eliminate the couple if the marriage is solemnised.

Netram, the father of bridegroom Jainendra Bansal, lodged a complaint with Dadri police and a heavy police force was deployed in both villages. After the marriage, which passed off peacefully, Bansal and his bride, Manisha, reached his house in Chithera village under heavy police protection. Police is camping in both villages.

“The marriage had been solemnised peacefully. Police has been deployed at both villages to control any untoward incident with is not expected but precautionary measures have been taken,” Greater Noida’s Superintendent of Police Surendra Verma said.
