NYC mayor: We’ll find whoever is behind car bomb

NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg reiterated Monday that there is no “legitimate” evidence that foreign terrorists were connected to a car bomb found in a smoking sport utility vehicle in Times Square, adding that there is a “high probability” that law enforcement would capture whoever was behind it.

Investigators still had videos to look through, but there was still no proof of any connection to groups such as the Taliban or al-Qaida, Bloomberg said on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano cautioned Monday against “premature decisions one way or another,” telling NBC’s “Today” that “every lead has to be pursued.”

Investigators haven’t ruled out any suspects, including foreign terrorist organizations, she said.

Authorities are seeking a middle-aged man who was videotaped shedding his shirt near the SUV where the bomb was found. They also wanted to talk to the owner of the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder.

Bloomberg said he wasn’t making any guarantees, but thought there was a good chance any perpetrators would be caught.

“Working with White House, working with Homeland Security, working with the FBI, all city agencies working together, there’s a high probability that we will find out who did this and apprehend them,” Bloomberg said.

Two street vendors alerted police to the car Saturday night parked on a block lined with Broadway theaters and restaurants. Thousands of tourists were cleared from the area, and streets were shut down for 10 hours.

The gasoline and propane bomb was crude but could have sprayed shrapnel and metal parts with enough force to kill pedestrians and knock out windows on one of America’s busiest streets, police said.
