Obama ordering review of mines with spotty records
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is ordering federal mine safety and health officials to take another look at all mines with troubling records of violations.
The review comes in response to the explosion at the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia that killed 29 people. That mine had a history of safety violations.
The White House says Obama will announce his directive during comments in the Rose Garden Thursday morning. He will also receive a preliminary report about the Upper Big Branch mine from Labor Secretary Hilda Solis and Mine Safety and Health Administrator Joe Main. The White House said their report will show there are far too many mines where safety is inadequate.
