Idol theft sparks violence in Uttar Pradesh

KALPI - Agitated over the theft of an idol from a temple, devotees here Saturday afternoon attacked the police and set six commuter buses on fire.

The mob indulged in vandalism and arson after the theft of a goddess\’ idol was detected early Saturday in Siddhi Devi temple in Kalpi town, 250 km from state capital Lucknow.

Police used force to disperse the protesters, who targeted roadways buses and other vehicles.

\”Though the situation is tense, it is under control,\” Additional Superintendent of Police R.S. Singh told reporters.
