LUCKNOW - A panchayat in Uttar Pradesh has ordered the killing of a couple after they eloped and married against their families’ wishes, police said Tuesday.
The Khedka village panchayat in UBaghpat district, about 400 km from Lucknow, passed the order against Jameel, 30, and his wife after their families complained.
After the panchayat order Sunday, the couple fled the village for their safety. The police registered a formal complaint Tuesday after some local journalists intervened.
“We learn the couple were from the same community. They faced stiff opposition over their relationship. So, the couple decided to run away to get married,” police inspector Mukesh Kumar told reporters in Baghpat.
“When the couple returned to their village, they were brought before the panchayat, which ordered they be killed if they remained in the village. We have started a probe and will take stern action against the culprits,” he added.
The couple are believed to be staying at a friend’s house in an adjoining village.
