SHIMLA - A senior Himachal Pradesh police official, booked for abetment to suicide and trying to destroy evidence, has proceeded on leave, an official said here Tuesday.

“Inspector General (Law and Order) Pradeep Kumar Sarpal today (Tuesday) went on leave. He will join duty after the completion of the inquiry,” Assistant Inspector General V.K. Dhawan told IANS.

Sarpal, his wife and his son Sidharth were booked March 28 after Ritu, 28, who was allegedly in love with Sidharth, committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence here.

Ritu’s parents alleged that she took the extreme step after the Sarpals refused to let her marry their son. Sidharth and Ritu knew each other for 15 years.

As per the first information report (FIR), Sarpal, his son and some policemen entered Ritu’s house after her suicide when no one was home and tried to tamper with the evidence.

Dissatisfied with the police investigation, her family is planning to move Himachal Pradesh High Court to seek a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter.
