INDORE - A gambling den operating from the house of a Congress leader’s kin in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore town was raided and six people were arrested, police said Sunday.

Police on a tip off raided the house of Zafar Baig - uncle of Congress leader Ayaz Baig - and found a sophisticated gambling den in Indore’s Bombay Bazaar area late Saturday.

Ayaz Baig, whose wife Sabrin Bi is now the corporator from Bombay Bazaar, has himself held several posts in the Congress party and has also been a corporator in the past.

“The police have arrested six people for gambling and seized over Rs.4 lakh in cash, gambling tables, dices, thousands of tokens, playing cards, mobile phones and four walkie-talkie sets besides two locally made pistols, seven cartridges and two spring-actuated knives,” said Indore Superintendent of Police (West) Srinivas Varma.

Those arrested have been identified as Savez Baig, nephew of Zafar Baig, who was overseeing the gambling operations and Munia, Pappu Kushwaha, Gulshan, Dheeraj and Jitendra Yadav.

The police were tipped off that Zafar Baig was also in the house when the raids were conducted but he could not be traced. He has been made an accused in the case since the house is owned by him.
