PATNA - The Bihar government has announced compensation for a couple implicated on false charges and sent to jail, officials said Tuesday.

Laxmi Sahu and his wife Bhawani Devi, residents of Godanpur area in Madhubani district, were wrongly charged in a criminal case and sent to jail in 2008. They were imprisoned for six months before a local court found the case against them to be false and ordered their release.

“They will be provided compensation as they suffered mental harassment and were sent to jail,” an official in the chief minister’s office said.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Monday told the state assembly that stern action would be taken against the police officials responsible for framing false charges against them.
