SHIMLA - A woman committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan at her residence in the Himachal Pradesh capital Sunday, police said.

However, her family alleged that police were not thoroughly investigating the matter. The family alleged that the son of a senior state police official was having an affair with the woman.

“Ritu Kalmatia, 28, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her residence in Shimla today (Sunday),” Superintendent of Police R.M. Sharma told reporters.

However, the woman’s uncle Ramesh alleged that the victim had an affair with son of a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer for long time and police were hushing up the matter.

“The woman took the extreme step after the man got engaged with some other woman yesterday (Saturday) with the consent of his family,” he said.

Sharma said the case was being investigated.

“We are investigating the allegations of the victim’s family,” he added.
