KOLKATA - Survivors of the devastating fire in Stephen Court here Wednesday complained that the firefighters reached late and were ill-equipped to carry out a rescue act.

“There was no ladder, the firefighters were also not there,” complained Barnali Roy who was inside the building when the fire broke out.

But the fire brigade personnel took umbrage at this.

When asked why they did not have safety nets that could have saved those who jumped from top floors, one of the firemen said: “I have never heard of any such nets in the country.”

Hearing this, one of the eyewitnesses quipped: “Wow! May be they haven’t got any safety nets…but the circus party has…they could have asked some circus party to lend them one to save the people!”
