MUMBAI - A nine-year-old girl was raped and murdered by some unidentified persons and her body was discovered from the terrace of a building in the police colony in northeast Mumbai Sunday, officials said.
The rape was confirmed in the autopsy report of the victim received by the police late Sunday evening.
Though no policemen were willing to go on record, unofficially they confirmed that the victim was raped and then strangled to death.
The victim - Anjali Jaiswal - was reported missing since 7 p.m. Saturday and a complaint was lodged by her father Ramesh Jaiswal with police.
However, around 10.30 a.m. Sunday, the daughter of a policeman who went to the terrace of the building to hang the clothes to dry, found the victim’s body.
Eyewitnesses said there were injuries on the victim, her undergarment was lying beside the body, and her clothes were torn.
She was found on the terrace of building No.109 in the police colony in Nehru Nagar where there are nearby dozen buildings serving as police personnels’ living quarters.
As news of the incident spread, hundreds of locals marched down and surrounded the Nehru Nagar police station nearby, raised slogans and demanded that the culprits be nabbed.
A Class 4 student, Anjali went missing after she was playing with other children in the vicinity, Alibaba Street, near Kurla railway station.
Surprisingly, none of the other children in the neighbourhood noticed Anjali being lured or taken away by anybody.
Meanwhile, the police have set up a special five-member team headed by a deputy police commissioner, to investigate the crime and trace out the culprits at the earliest.
