WASHINGTON - The Pentagon headquarters of the US Defence Department was locked down Thursday evening after a reported shooting outside the facility.

A police spokeswoman in Arlington, Virginia, where the sprawling office complex is located, said that two or three people were wounded in an incident involving the Pentagon police, a civilian guard agency.

The shooting occurred near an entrance from the underground Pentagon stop of the Washington Metro, the capital’s light-rail system.

The Pentagon stands just across the Potomac River from Washington.

The lockdown was later lifted, though the Pentagon’s Metro gate remained closed.
