BHUBANESWAR - Over 50 people have been arrested in connection with a clash between two groups in Orissa’s Puri district, police said Thursday. More than 25 people were injured in Wednesday’s clash.

“We have arrested 53 people from two villages for their involvement in the clash,” said police officer Sushama Pradhan.

Residents of two villages, Rebana Nuagaon and Jagannathpur, hurled bombs and exchanged gunfire over differences around collection of money during Holi.

The villagers also burnt several houses during the clash.

The area continues to be tense.

“Three platoons of police have been deployed in the area,” Pradhan added.

Male members of the two villages have fled apprehending arrest, she said, adding that police along with the district administration are trying to resolve the differences through peace committees.
