Indian Navy plane crashes into residential area

HYDERABAD - An Indian Navy aircraft exploded during an aerobatic display and crashed into a residential area here Wednesday. Witnesses said about half a dozen people on the ground were injured.

Television cameras showed the pilot ejecting from the falling plane, but a senior police officer said he may not have survived the impact of the fall.

Indian Navy spokesman Commander P.V. Satish said in New Delhi that he had no details but confirmed the accident had taken place.

The crashed plane was one of four navy Southern Pawan aerobatic team that was taking part in an air show. Thousands of people were enjoying the spectacle when disaster struck.

Witnesses said they heard a loud boom, after which the plane went down.

A thick cloud of smoke rose to the sky near the Begumpet airport following the accident.

Other witnesses said the plane had fallen into a thickly populated area and that the third floor of a residential building took the maximum impact of the exploding
