Summary Box: Copper eases off morning highs

WHY DID COPPER RISE: An huge earthquake in Chile, one of the biggest producers of copper, caused fears that supplies could be disrupted.

WHY DID COPPER EASE BACK LATER: Traders became less concerned about earthquake damage later in the day. Most of Chile’s copper production happens in the opposite end of the country from where the earthquake took place.

WHAT OTHER COMMODITIES WERE MOVING: Cotton continued its nearly monthlong climb. Cotton is rising because of supply concerns heading into the planting season.
