ALLAHABAD - Ill-treated and tortured physically, a first year student of Allahabad University who was allegedly ragged by his seniors fainted and was admitted to a hospital, police said Tuesday.
Amarjeet Kumar Yadav is still under medical treatment, but out of danger now, authorities said.
Police have registered a case of ragging against two senior students. Both are absconding.
“Yadav has alleged he was being subjected to physical torture in a room of the G.N. Jha hostel on campus for the past few days,” police inspector R.B. Singh told reporters in this city about 200 km from state capital Lucknow.
In his statement, Yadav said that two students of second year BSc - Sunny Singh and Madhwesh Tiwari - ragged and abused him physically to an extent that he fainted in the hostel room.
According to Yadav, his two seniors Monday first asked him to roll on the floor and forced him to do sit ups and also abused him physically by forcing him to strip and perform objectionable acts.
“When Yadav fainted, the two seniors managed to escape from the spot. However, other inmates of the hostel later rushed Yadav to a private nursing home,” said Singh.
The varsity administration has initiated an enquiry into the case.
“We will definitely not spare the students, if they are found guilty,” chief proctor Jata Shankar told reporters Tuesday.
Last week the state government passed a bill to check ragging in educational institutions.
The bill provides a two-year jail term for the guilty and a fine of Rs.10,000, or both for those involved in ragging.
The bill also contains a provision to debar the guilty from seeking admission for five years in any educational institution in the state. The legislation will cover all schools, colleges, universities, hostels and coaching institutions.
