GANDHINAGAR - Chirping sound from a parcel at Ahmedabad railway station led to the recovery of 200 exotic birds from it, Gujarat police said Monday

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police G.D. Trivedi, the parcel arrived from Kolkata by train Sunday and included exotic parrots, lovebirds, doves and pigeons, all species protected under the Wildlife Protection Act.

The parcel, addressed to a person named Munnabhai, evoked suspicion due to the chirping.

Close scrutiny revealed birds in a cage that had been heavily wrapped. A watch was kept on it and the person who came to collect the parcel, later identified as Mohammed Sheikh, was held for questioning.

Sheikh was an errand boy for the main accused who managed to escape. The state forest department is now investigating the case.
