GHAZIABAD - A 19-year-old girl was set on fire by a man in Ghaziabad when she refused to accept his marriage proposal. The girl suffered 70 percent burns and is in critical condition, police said Monday.

According to Superintendent of Police M.M. Begh, Rukhsana Parveen was alone at her house in Hafizpur when Jameel Khan, 25, came and proposed to her. When Parveen refused and objected to his advances, Khan poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.

Neighbours came to Parveen’s rescue after hearing her screams, police said.

“Jameel Khan has been arrested. The girl is in critical condition,” Begh said.

The girl’s family allege that Khan also tried to rape her.
