Kashmir government orders probe in youth’s killing

SRINAGAR - The Jammu and Kashmir government Friday evening ordered a probe into the death of a teenager who fell to a bullet in summer capital Srinagar, provoking massive protests.

The probe into the death of Zahid Farooq Sheikh, 16, who died after being hit by a bullet in the chest in Nishat area will be headed by the Kashmir divisional commissioner, Naseem Lankar, an official statement said here.

The probe would be completed within seven days and the report submitted to the government, the statement added.

While locals and relatives alleged the youth had been shot at by some paramilitary troopers, the police here said they have already lodged a First Information Report in the incident and investigations have been started to ascertain the facts and identify those responsible for the killing.

Tension ran high in the Nishat area as locals and relatives carrying the youth’s body staged a sit-in outside the police station demanding a copy of the FIR.
