HYDERABAD - The death toll in the fire that broke out at a private hospital in Hyderabad rose to two with the death of a nurse who succumbed to her injuries Wednesday.
Usha Rani, a nurse who had sustained serious injuries after she jumped from the second floor of the hospital to escape the fire, died at a hospital, police said.
The fire at Park Hospital in Somajiguda area in the city centre had killed one person and injured 40 Tuesday. The five-storeyed building was gutted in the blaze, apparently caused by short circuit.
A 75-year-old patient, who was rescued from the intensive care unit of the hospital, died at a hospital Tuesday evening. Doctors said the lung complications of Mangaiah got aggravated due to the smoke.
Greater Hyderabad Mayor Kartika Reddy told reporters that five of the injured were undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit and the condition of one was critical.
The mayor visited the accident site and said an inquiry had already been ordered as the hospital lacked fire safety measures. She said every effort would be made to ensure that all hospitals in the city adopt safety measures.
