LUCKNOW - At least eight people — five women and three children — were killed Saturday when the tractor-trolley they were travelling in fell into a gorge in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district, police said.
Ten people were also injured in the mishap that took place in Lakhwapur town in Bahraich, some 270 km from Lucknow.
“It appears the tractor driver, who also got injured in the mishap, lost control of the vehicle after which it skidded off the road and fell into the gorge, killing eight people on the spot,” police inspector Chandrashekhar Singh told reporters in Bahraich.
“Of the eight killed, five were women and three children. Nearly 25 people were riding on the tractor-trolley at the time of the accident,” he added.
The injured are being treated at a hospital, where the condition of three is critical, police said.
All those riding the tractor-trolley were residents of a village in Bahraich district and were going to attend a function in another village.
